Working together against family violence
The Barwon South West Integrated Family Violence reforms (BSWIFV) started in 2006 to improve and develop services for people within the region who are experiencing family violence. The BSWIFV regional coordination is based at Community Connections and is funded by the Victorian government.
The main strategy for encouraging best practices is to provide a range of regular communication and information sharing opportunities amongst family violence providers and broader stakeholders. Best practice forums and dissemination of relevant collaboratively-researched information are examples of some of our activities.
There are nine priorities for the reforms, including developing clear referral pathways and creating strategies for continuous improvement. A main priority is children and young people, which we addressed with the creation of the Regional Schools Family Violence Project. All plans are linked to the Regional Indigenous Family Violence Action Plan.

Preventing family violence in future generations
The Regional Schools Family Violence Project is a component of the Barwon South West Integrated Family Violence Network (BSWIFV).
The project addresses the BSWIFV Work Plan Priority 7: ‘Focus on children and young people’ with a particular emphasis on the prevention of FV in future generations.
The Regional Schools Family Violence Project intends to work with schools and school-related organisations to promote prevention activities and to raise awareness of how family violence impacts on women, children and young people. Project partners represent a diverse range of agencies and communities.
More information is available on the BSWIFV website by selecting Regional Schools Family Violence Project from the menu. |

Helping family law services to focus on children
The Family Law Pathways Network is a coordinated network for professionals operating within the family law system. Funded by the federal Attorney-General’s Department, there are over 20 networks across Australia. Community Connections coordinates the network for the Barwon South West Victoria region, from Geelong, Victoria to Mount Gambier, South Australia.
Regular meetings, electronic news bulletins and planned education events and forums help Barwon South West Family Law Pathways Network member organisations and their staff to make more effective and streamlined referrals throughout the region and to better understand the range of other services available to their clients. There is also opportunity for members to create innovative or best-practice partnerships, and to provide policy advice to the Attorney-General's Department.
Network members come from key organisations that provide services for separating families, including a variety of family support providers, legal practitioners specialising in family law, representatives from Family Law Registries, the Child Support Agency, and other service providers that support the family law system without being a part of it, such as drug and alcohol, mental health and domestic violence practitioners.
For more information visit the government website.
