Playtime in the imagination of Aboriginal Dreamtime The program is flexible and draws on stories including traditional Australian Aboriginal legends. It is the philosophy of Reading Discovery that all children and adults living in Australia, regardless of their cultural origins, will be enriched by having an aquaintance with Indigenous Australian stories. Dreaming stories vary throughout Australia and there are different versions of the same theme. Reading Discovery selects resources from as many Aboriginal nations as possible and encourages the use of local stories where possible.
Outcomes •To encourage parents to play imaginatively with their pre-school children through stories which are read, told and created in order to enhance language, congitive and social development and reading-readiness by school age •To increase the knowledge and awareness of indigenous literacies and culture to local indigenous and non-indigenous families in South West Victoria •To educate parents about the role they play in emergent literacy skills and the role they play in their child's development •To give parents the language and confidence to talk to teachers about their children's learning skills and emergent literacy development •To develop children's language, cognition and stories through play •To learn about the natural world •To learn about their clan group and their totem •To learn about their traditional land •To learn respect for their Elders |
