Legal advice and educationThe South West Community Legal Centre (SWCLC) provides free advice, information and referral services to individuals and communities in the south west of Victoria. Clients can speak with a solicitor over the telephone, or make an appointment to see a solicitor in person. Staffed by our qualified and experienced lawyers, the SWCLC is also supported by a loyal group of volunteer solicitors who are sourced from local private firms and operate out-of-hours. This arrangement provides clients with greater access to the program while maintaining an important connection with private practitioners in the area.Staff combine casework with community legal education, and also organise the popular Annual Social Justice Forum. The SWCLC runs several successful programs, including:Legal Advice Line The Legal Advice Line is a free service that operates for one hour each weekday morning. Lawyers provide free legal advice to callers, and where appropriate, arrange for an appointment with a solicitor at one of our office locations across South Western Victoria. Family Violence Court-Based Application Program The main feature of the Family Violence Court-Based Application Program (FVCBAP) is the duty lawyer service that is available at the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Friday mornings from 9am. The duty lawyer will provide advice, referral and representation to people applying for family violence Intervention Orders and Aggrieved Family Members (AFM). This is a free service, funded by the Victorian Government, and you can access this service by reporting to the Warrnambool Magistrates Court counter staff and asking to be placed on the list to see the FVCBAP duty lawyer. For more information, click here or download the brochure 'Family Violence Court-Based Applicant Program'. Community Education and Support Lawyers and other staff can attend meetings, forums and events to deliver information sessions to groups. We provide information on general legal issues or we can cater to the specific needs of a particular group that is experiencing the same issue.
